The author deeply understands your pain and he speaks in a way that you will both connect the dots to the specific faith you lost as well grasp that these mechanisms and feelings are not unique to your prior faith system.
“What Happened to You?: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing” By Oprah Winfrey , Bruce D. Perry – This book was deeply helpful to understanding trauma and more importantly the affect trauma has on people often explaining why people behave and think and process the world around them.
“Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead” by Brené Brown – Brené Brown walks the reader into understanding shame, vulnerability, and authenticity and you are going to be better off for taking her work seriously.
“If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus” By Philip Gulley – This book, better than any other, laid out simply and plainly what a healthy faith system would look like and how it would operate. Once you see such you can never unsee the unhealthiness in the faith systems all around you.
“Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life” By Richard Rohr – Richard Rohr shows the reader that one can be both active and informed with a religious paradigm. He navigates his faith with both eyes wide open while placing value on human development and honoring the path of enlightenment that leads one to redefine faith and spirituality.
